Character Inspiration for Writers

characters“How do you come up with the characters for your novels?”
This isn’t the most common question that is asked of me, but it is one of the more interesting for me to answer. I wish I could say that the characters are well thought out ahead of time and painstakingly sculpted by design into the people they portray within my work, but the truth is that, for me at least, the characters come spontaneously with the scenes that unfold in my mind. It would be those scenarios or storylines, and the characters required within those moments, that come to me when inspiration hits.

 

Tips for Writing Your First Novel

writing-tipsEver since I wrote my first book, Blood Harvest, I have met countless people who tell me they have a wonderful idea for a book, only to discover what they really have a is a premise or a scene in mind that would they believe would make for a great story. Beyond that initial inspiration they have little else in the way of how the story pieces itself together, almost like a pitch without a product.

Now I realize that the initial shock of that admission may shake the very foundation of some people’s core. Admittedly, even as my eyes glance up and take in those three words at the top of the page, it does seem an extreme opinion over an otherwise intellectually beneficial institution, especially for a writer of books such as me.

Please allow me to elaborate.

The Moment Blood Harvest Was Born

I remember it was a hot summer day during my fifth trimester of Chiropractic college when the concept of writing my novel, “Blood Harvest” first took root in my head. Truth be told I had always been writing… something, mostly ideas for novels or scenes that played like clips from big budget Hollywood films in my mind as I daydreamed through some of the more mundane moments throughout my scholastic history.
